Description	Ngare Ndare forest is located in the Imenti district of northern Kenya. The forest is indigenous and covers an area of 5,554 hectares. The direct beneficiaries are 3,000 people living in the northern part of the forest although a total of 8320 live in the surrounding area and will benefit from clean water for themselves and their livestock. In addition, the river flows on to a large population further north in Kenya. The project emerged from an inappropriate use of current water consumption for both domestic and agriculture. To improve hygiene and health, combating cholera, diarrheal diseases and protecting the environment, the project aims to: Enclose and protect the spring on the heart of the forest. Build cattle drinking points for both the forest areas, and areas adjacent to the forest Build good water points, shower and washing facilities outside the forest for the community especially in the area Manyangalo and Ngare Ndare Increase community awareness of the benefits of standards of hygiene and proper use of chemicals for agriculture especially in farms near the water courses.

En el bosque de Ngare Ndare al norte del Mount Kenia se encuentra el poblado de Manyangalo donde conviven en paz personas de nueve tribus diferentes. Humphrey Mwambeo trabaja para la ONG local Ngare Ndare Forest Trust y presentó a África Digna un ambicioso proyecto que buscaba mejorar los sistemas de saneamiento de las diferentes comunidades de la zona,establecer puntos de acceso al agua para el ganado y la protección de los cauces hídricos que siguen su curso proveyendo a las comunidades vecinas.

En una zona donde nunca se ha utilizado una ducha y casi la totalidad de la población hacía sus necesidades al aire libre, este proyecto tenía una fase educativa y una constructiva. Humphrey nos cuenta: “Some community members in Manyangalo have not yet fully understood how to use the toilet facility already constructed. This calls for timely cleaning of the facility to ensure that it remains clean. However, skills on how to effectively utilize the facilities are being shared amongst the community members and the challenge is expected to subside soon.”

Pero el proyecto sigue su curso y esperamos que durante el 2011 las otras comunidades de la zona que esperan con ilusión puedan disfrutar también de nuevas instalaciones que ayuden a reducir las enfermedades relacionadas con el agua.

Después de algunas dificultades por las intensas lluvias, el proyecto ha iniciado la construcción de la primera fase en la población de Manyangalo. Con 900 habitantes sólo disponían de una letrina publica, lavándose ellos, la ropa y los alimentos en los pequeños canales que comparten con el ganado.

La construcción de unas nuevas letrinas, unas duchas y una zona de lavadero se verá complementado con la acción social del Ngare Ndare Forest Trust para ayudar a mejorar las condiciones de vida.
